The first SOK coworking space in Saint-Petersburg
Year: 2021, Completed
Location: Saint Petersburg
Description:
SOK “Dostoevsky,” covering nearly 4,000 m², occupies five of the six floors of a building in central Saint Petersburg, near the “Dostoevskaya” metro station. The team was tasked with developing an architectural and interior design solution that maintains the recognizable style of the network while integrating local business, historical, and aesthetic contexts.
As part of the project, an activity-based workspace system was introduced. This integration required precise calculations for the necessary number and size of zones for both work and relaxation. SOK “Dostoevsky” features 595 fixed workstations, 32 flexible desks, 10 meeting rooms of various sizes and layouts, 7 coffee points, 12 phone booths for private communication, 7 cloakrooms, and 7 printing areas. The planning of shared spaces was designed to accommodate the needs of diverse users, including professionals in niche fields.
The work and meeting areas are designed for both informal team collaboration and individual work, as well as relaxation. All spaces are highlighted with custom-made furniture featuring soft, fluid shapes, emphasizing spatial flexibility and creating a cozy, comfortable atmosphere.
A distinctive feature of the project is the community bar, designed for informal communication, networking, and quick meetings. This compact, two-layered circular space can be accessed from multiple open-space zones. The bar can also function as a mini-lecture hall. Its interior, featuring soft sofas, is separated from the outer work tables by a vertical wooden panel, with chairs placed around the outer perimeter and a living tree at its center.
SOK “Dostoevsky” is built with maximum flexibility in mind for both work and informal spaces. Meeting rooms can be expanded or reduced in size, transformed into conference halls, private offices, or lecture rooms, and interconnected as needed. These adjustments can be made without disrupting business operations, requiring loud construction work, or modifying engineering systems.
The design concept is based on a balance between SOK’s signature style and the local character of Saint Petersburg. The coworking space features extensive greenery, reflecting the importance of green spaces in a densely built historical area. The abundant biophilic design elements create an atmosphere of an urban oasis.
A second decorative theme is inspired by the legacy of classic Russian literature, seen in the names of meeting rooms, large-scale literary quotes on walls, bookshelves, and book-crossing stations.
The primary geometric motif in the interior is the circle, which appears in the design of furniture, lighting fixtures, decorative elements, navigation, meeting room layouts, and the community bar. This choice references the network’s logo while reinforcing the concept of an urban oasis in the heart of old Saint Petersburg.
The color palette is based on warm tones, primarily white, beige, and green. The upholstery colors echo the hues of the Gulf of Finland, while wood, stone, and concrete textures, accented with color, visually connect the space to nature. This palette and material selection create an inspiring and cozy ambiance, especially during Saint Petersburg’s often gloomy weather.
